Toto, '40 Trips Around the Sun'

Jeff Frankenstein'd from unreleased tracks...took Jeff & Mike and then
re-tooled the song keeping their tracks! Vinnie on Alone, not sure about
drums on Struck by Lightening yet.

First thought on new songs...where is Bobby Kimball! Seriously guys...
you can't throw a bone to Bobby? Don't know the story, but that is as bad
as Grand Funk Railroad touring w/o Mark Farner...both guys are still alive...
don't tempt fate!

Luke:
Struck by Lightening & Alone the two originals and thanks to the discovery of some unfinished tracks, the band was also able to revisit previously unreleased material featuring late Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro, who died in 1992, and his brother, bassist Mike Porcaro, who died in 2015 after battling ALS. “We were able to take things with Jeff and Mike that were recorded during the 1981 to 1984 era, and Sony found a whole vault full of s--- that we forgot about,” Lukather says. “Just basic tracks that we didn’t use, because 'Oh, that chorus sucks.' So we were able to go in and go, 'Well, the chorus sucks, but the f---ing track was killer. Can we fix this? Let’s rewrite it and insert it.' We were able to do that now.”

The group used that process on “Spanish Sea,” which grew out of a musical idea from the period when it was working on the 1984 album Isolation. “As David says, it’s an heir apparent to an ‘Africa’ kind of a groove," Lukather notes. "It’s got massive Brian Wilson-like vocals on it. We really went for it. We said, ‘Well, if we’re going to be over-produced and everybody hates that s--- about us anyway, our fans love it, so let’s give them what they want.’ So we kitchensinked this bad boy!”

40 Trips Around the Sun is due on February 11, 2018. This first taste has me wishing that day was already here.

(I will never fully get how they select their songs...
how many Best Of's already out with these songs on them?) YAWN...
MASSIVE elephant in the room...Youtube any of these songs!
brings back to Paul's thread for a moment

I dig the Alone tune. Vinnie kills as usual! He would have awesome in Toto. He’s awesome on any project or song!

Agreed...Kurtis...VC goes way back with the history of TOTO
and he and Jeff were pretty tight...to see VC on the 40th Tour
would be as EPIC ad it gets! Luke would play with a guitar woody
all night! Luke comes alive when he feels connected to the guys
in the band...Vinnie would be that extra UMPH on this tour!

Dreamin' I suppose...

Jeff-Paich Interview around first TOTO lp 1978

Jim Ladd is an LA DJ legend, but he sucked back then...
some of his questions and comments are pretty lame
imo. Jeff at 24 sounds like he was born old & wise.

Great find!
This is a HUGE gig for a teenager...talk about having confidence in "the kid"
Sonny & Cher were a big hit, especially the TV show, Jeff had to be super reliable
and consistent to keep this gig. His childhood seemed to groom him for this
growing up in the Porcaro household.

These shows are hard to do...you have to be locked on the singers and dynamics.
I can see Jeff sitting, waiting for Sonny to SHUT UP and hit the verbal cue.
Man, I just do not see Sonny & Cher together at all...talk about an odd couple!
Sonny really sucked...he just yells and rants...talk about a guy that took
what little talent he had and maxed it out. Alone, he was zero without Cher.
Never happen today where a female has to submit to a guy like this just because
he is a man.

Jeff played out much more here...lots of nuances...stuff I never hear him do later on.
I get the feeling there was a lot of freedom on this gig as long as S&C were happy.

I assume he memorized this entire gig as his reading wasn't too great
