I heard a comment that was very cool at the time, but it wasn't until years later that it struck me as historical.
Waiting for a table at The Baked Potato, I was talking to Don Randi's son, a guy who has literally seen every great drummer and musician walk through the doors of that place. I asked him what drummer stood out over all the years he worked here. He paused then said, "Steve Gadd...he was the best I ever saw play here!"

Taste and color, because man, Vinnie has been so savage over there back in the days, so it depends of the taste of the person, Jeff Porcaro too did some crazy stuff over there.
So, Don's son must prefer this kind of drumming, and nothing wrong here as Steve is an all time great.
I come from Tain, Vinnie, Omar, Jeff, Fish, Stewart, and many more...

Good points Rodge...there was more context to his comment, and yes, it was one guy's
opinion, but it was the way he said it, the pause...the depth of his reflecting and pointing
out that Gadd felt the best of any drummer. He specifically mentioned players who
had amazing chops, but he is not a drummer and it was coming from that perspective...as
a guy who listens to bands every night...Gadd felt the best to anyone. I do think it is significant
that a guy who hears some of the BEST players in each decade say ONE player stands out
of the pack. He was maybe 40 at the time when he said this and he grew up in his dad's club.
His dad is also a player--Don Randi--who has played with many of the greats...

Just one man's opinion, but reflective of Gadd's impact, his ability to connect with non-drummers, to
play for the song always over playing licks and tricks...we are all guilty of over playing...
especially in a venue like The Baked Potato. I cannot think of a better compliment as a drummer
than someone saying, "Your feel" is the best I ever heard...it is more than just hearing, it is
feeling..."You made the music feel amazing..." Sign me up!

Some serious groove on this one.

Stevie Wonder backed up with Steve Gadd on drums.

Live Marcus Miller losing his damn mind soloing with Gadd behind the drums. A lesson in Groove.

More chops at a live Return to Forever Gig (Chick Corea). Fusion Gadd...

The '73 solo was aggressive. Steve just never gets too far out of pocket...
The Stevie groove was very close to church drumming...Stanley at the MI
clinic talked a lot about watching Stevie closely picking up on his motions
for cues...really interesting stuff catered to one artist's style. Gadd is spot
on w/Stevie's nuances @3:23
