Wow - he's got the Sanchez/Wertico stuff flowing so nicely. I always thought feeling the emotional high of the music while you're playing is one of the highlights of being a musician. So cool to see.

One of my favorite GG songs, and one of the flashiest.

A few years ago I asked myself which song of theirs I liked the best and came up with this one, which is not the flashiest:

The song makes me think of this sculpture that's not far from where I live:

Image

In Memory of the Deltawater Pioneer Fishermen:

"The old fisherman passes his net for the last time, weary not from the rigorous work he grew to love. No, this weariness comes deep from within; the river closes today for commercial fishing. But it’s not the end of the season, it’s the end of his livelihood, and an era. He will never fish these waters again.

He handles the net with care, using the motions he’s repeated thousands of times before. He contemplates the culture, but the past dominates his thoughts. His eldest son crosses his mind: as a youngster the boy would accompany him on his outings, just as he accompanied his own father.

Fishing also became his son’s life, and he too built his own boat a few years ago; a dream realized through years of hard work and sacrifice. That was a proud day, and he remembers the boat’s christening and the celebration that followed.

He’s brought back to the present as a boat passes the harbor with a For Sale sign.

I hope the boy can find a good job to provide for his young family.

He drifts to pleasanter thoughts of his grandchildren..."

Great song, each Gentle Giant album has its own precious goldmine IMHO. I can definitely bridge the quoted text with that song as well, thanks for sharing that.

Music has this powerful dimension which touches various aspects of life's reality and more. Not many musicians can communicate to that level though...
