Darby Todd

Postby David Bouet » Sat Feb 13, 2021 2:01 pm

Darby’s first album just came out. It’s dynamite!
The drumming is insanely good but it’s not just a drummer’s record.
World class line up, great compositions and covers.
His version of I’m tweaked/attack.. is absolutely killing.
He’s a well known session cat in the UK. He also plays in clubs with top Jazz guys when he’s not touring.
Until covid hit, he was touring with Martin Barre, Jethro Tull’s guitarist, including many dates in the US.

3 of the originals on the album are available as minus drums (various mix options) + transcription.
One of them is a big band arrangement by and featuring UK bass legend Laurence Cottle and the other with a double drum solo with Marco Minnemann.

i listened to the first tune 3x...almost incomprehensible drumming!
2% of the pro drumming community can handle this stuff?

Interesting statements.
I guess I’m happy to be in the two percent then. Darby is definitely at the top of that community over here. Good enough for the likes of Robben Ford and Robert Plant to book him..
I have to say, I’m puzzled it took you 3x to come to this conclusion though. The 3rd must have been torture!
Context is important here, you heard the drum solos. The whole album is great.
I wish I could have shared the big band tune, you might dig that one more.
The album’s line up is huge. A lot of work and perfect use of his time off tours during the UK lockdown.
Perspective.
Peace.

...when I say "handle" I didnt mean 'listening' I meant playing
what Marco pulls off...that was insane high-end blasting!!!
...we are a LONG way from the sexy grooves of James Gadson here!

Pocketplayer, my bad.
That puts me firmly back in the 98% then.
You clearly know Marco’s playing and sound very well.
I had to look at the transcription that indicates who’s playing in the drum solo section at first listen. Darby is pretty ferocious too!
I agree with the Gadson comment obviously.
He’s groove and feel royalty and a huge influence.
Having said that, almost to my surprise, I’m also drawn to some of the “Uber” guys as I get older.
I think that started with some vids of Virgil that were posted here.

LOL Marco is definitely an "Uber" player...I call them circus freaks myself!
Virgil set the standard for me as well...I love listening to stuff I can barely
comprehend much less attempt to play...the ideas and facility to pull of those
ideas makes today's Uber cats doing things Ringo never dreamed of! lol

Shared on Darby’s Facebook page.
Doesn’t look impossible but playing something like that and the rest of the chart at 170
