Did you ever mess with putting some gaff tape on the underside? Its not ideal but it will control unwanted wash.

Yeah, but I just prefer 20s - for most situations I'm in. If I had a full time jazz trio, I'd play a 22 K Con med thin low, with a 20 left side ride with 3 rivets - K con hi hats or K Lights. But, right now, the 20 K Custom medium is versatile enough for most of what I'm playing - I can put a Promark rivet chain on it and it works great - it doesn't work as well on the 20 K ride - it's much more stiff...if I'm doing a quiet first set of jazz standards, I'll use a light stick like a Vic Firth AJ3 or 7A...for louder sets, I play 5Bs...sticks effect the cymbal a lot! Plus, touch, room, etc. etc.

I also like the 20" K Custom Session Ride - much drier and brighter than the K Custom Medium, tons of stick definition...those are the two rides I'm using right now - I switch them out depending on gig. K Custom Session isn't as versatile IMO.

22 k dark medium, I have a brilliant finish one which is a little brighter (supposed to be the only one they made in brilliant for an endorser)
21 special dry, not for volume but the bell is a work of art.
21 Paiste Dark energy mk 2 is amazing

my 22 A Custom is a little light and washy for my tastes, thinking of sandblasting it to see what happens......

I play a 20" K Custom Dark from late 90's...

but I've recently heard(and played slightly) the Benny Greb Sand Ride at a clinic, and was pretty blown away. Very nice all around ride.
Some not so recent playinghttp://www.cdbaby.com/cd/ScottPazera.. track 7

That's why I was thinking of doing a sandblast on the A Custom, nice cymbal, but too washy, it's a prototype that I got for 100 quid so not too much of a bother if it goes wrong.

I've had a lot of luck just throwing a piece of moongel on the top side...depending on where you place it you get varying degrees of dampening. For medium-up to uptempo Jazz a moongel up near the bell gives me just enough extra definition without changing the overall character of the cymbal...20" K Dark Ride...then, when I want more wash I simply peel it off. To get a more dramatic muting effect I'll place it near the edge...it gets closer to that Gary Novak CCEBII kind of definition. :D

BTW, I believe Gary was playing a 20" K Dark Crash with some tape beneath as a ride...
