AKG "groove mic pack" for toms, overheads and BD.
Shure sm57 on snare.
Cheap-o mic on the hat I forget the brand of, sorry.

I use Garage Band because it's already installed, and it serves my purpose. My workflow is pretty basic.
I've never used a MacBook Pro for recording, only the Air. Only word of caution is some compatibility issues with the recent 2013 Airs and some USB recording units (see my Presonus issue).

For the Saffire I'm going Firewire to Thunderbolt and had no issues so far. The firewire cord it comes with is actually FW800 on one end and 400 on the other (the output jack on the unit is FW400) . This means if you're using PC you need a male-to-male FW 400 cable since FW800 is mac only (and no longer supported - hence the Thunderbolt adapter).

Good luck.

For archival purposes here's the recording I did with the Saffire:

Presonus Firestudio Project here. Love it. Having eight inputs is nice.

Hooked to an iMac with ProTools or Garageband. Works great both ways.
