I Hate maple sticks. They buzz in my hands and they are way too light to make
some of the work. Vater Power House is a great pair of sticks.

Yes! Those are great! I tried a bunch a year ago and loved them, but at the time, they seemed a bit long. I'll have to give them another try! Thanks for the reminder.

Maple is less dense then Hickory.

Out of curiosity DSOP, what kind of ride? Maybe it's the angle of attack? I know it's a very personal thing, particularly with rides. Though harsher angles with the acorn tip could definitely cause some funny wear.

It's a medium-thin Sabian Legacy Heavy 22". The cymbal itself is probaly sitting somewhere around 45 degrees and the stick is probably hitting it very close to the same plane. I could be playing harder than I think though, 'cause I've got headphones on and I'm recording. The recording workstation I'm using doesn't allow for much control headphone-wise, so I probably end up hitting harder. That must be it.

I was just thinking maybe the rides surface is particularly rough, heavy lathing, etc... combined with a bit of angle would be like sand paper to wood if you even had a slight amount of slide in the contact.

I also can't say enough about Todd's sig. stick. For me, it's pretty much perfect. 5B in size, with that acorn tip and made of maple. I swear by them, and I always try to have a whole slew of 'em in the bag. I tried them on a whim. He did a clinic at a drum shop about 15 minutes from my house (of which I didn't know about. Silly me for not researching that one, I've been kicking myself ever since), and they started to stock them.

An amazing stick indeed.

Probably just a bad batch of sticks.. Maybe a batch that got dried out a bit..
I find humidity in sticks really effect weight, vibration and durability.. Did you get them all at the same store?

Might be why the Promarks last longer...

You may be right. I'll definitely try another batch eventually from somewhere else.

I just received a pair of poorly mismatched sticks (via an internet order):

Wow. Though that might be cosmetic. I'm not sure about Vater's process but that may be part of how they weighed them... maybe?
