Yeah I want to stress that I am the one "not getting it", there's nothing wrong whatsoever with his playing, he clearly is at a master's level. Maybe one day my ears will open up too.

There´s probably a ton of intricate and complex stuff he´s playing that I might not even be aware of. I know this is a drum forum but when I first posted this video
it was really about the music, not the drumming ( which by all means is freaking awesome).

I just think its a beautiful melody...yeah, its in 5 and 7, but to my ears it sounds like pop music...its easy to listen to, its catchy, its a short song and it grooves hard.

This is the song that opens up the record... for all you guys who have liked what you´ve heard so far, get this cd...pay special attention to song number 3 - a spooky piano
out of tune laying some sick riff...

Whenever you´re "not getting something" is when you have a good opportunity to learn something new. :-)

This is my favorite track on that album. There's more instrumentation on the studio version and they really massage the meters to hide them behind the melodies. Very good music making.

Dafnis is really covering some uncharted territory with an explorer's heart. I've seen him at KOSA in Vermont and with his ensemble at the Jazz Bakery in LA. On the break he told me about the risks and rewards of breaking away from convention and taking your own path. I really enjoy listening to his work!

Wow that vid was insane... For me I love his playing when there's no Clave being played..

As soon as the clave happens it's this annoying anvil to my head that pulls my attention, then there's a bunch of crazy stuff played over top that is unbelievably difficult to play, and full awesome props to him for that but I lose all sense of pulse and groove when I hear 2 things going on that are have nothing to do with each other... "In my opinion"...

I feel that way alot of the time when I hear the Latin/AfroCuban Monsters out there.. It's like an epileptic fit for my brain when the clave starts.. Sounds like a full dishwasher falling down the stairs...

It's weird because in a regular song, with melodic instruments any clave pattern is the soul of the music, and all parts groove and fit.. Whenever I hear a drum solo with a clave by an advanced master I start having seizures...

I probably don't have the rhythmic smarts to get it...

I saw Dafnis' quartet play at the Zinc Bar a couple years back- he played a song and I could not figure out the time signature to save my life- Cliff was sitting across from me- he said he didn't get it at first either but Dafnis had explained it was 6/8 with the clave played as 2:3 for one measure and 3:2 for the next. Talk about pushing boundaries! That'll make your head spin...

i can see why some don't dig his playing. i'm not a fan of it feel wise. i get where he's coming from. i just don't dig the rigidness. the solo stuff is just not fun for me. phrasings all over the place. with the band he sounds very good. there was a thing on DIME of a michel camilo and dafnis playing drums in a trio setting. it's great quality. i watched the entire thing and surprised i made it all the way through. it was the first time i really took him in and gave him a listen. i dig it but i don't. loved all the links people posted about him talking about music and rhythm.
