Phil T. wrote: Surprised to see a shout-out to Fripp on HOD!
I met Fripp back in 92 when he gave a clinic and performance in NJ and I was fortunate enough to spend several hours with him - with the most intriguing being the dinner conversation. Fripp is actually a lot more outgoing and humorous, definitely dropping the rigid persona, when he feels comfortable with those in his company.
His outlook on the functions of a drummer and his suggestions definitely altered my approach to my playing. Needless to say, I was young and impressionable. As the playing became more and more unconventional, I wound up getting tossed out of the band I was in at that time. :)

I can't believe I forgot to add Lindsey Buckingham to my list of favorite guitarists.

Aside from all the others mentioned I've always dug Steve Khan, Mike Stern, John Abercrombie and of course, SCO!!! Also, I marvel at the stuff Ralph Towner has done acoustically as well as James Taylor and Leo Kottke. And let's not forget Pat Metheny, Robben Ford, Robin Trower, George Benson, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Loeb...and the list goes on. I'm a hack guitarist myself...I actually played pretty well at one point and even played acoustic gigs here and there when I was in my 20's & 30's. Got my first Strat last year...I'll be after a Telecaster next and maybe a 335 after that!!

aside from those mentioned, I like Danny Gatton quite a bit. I have some live stuff from the 70's (Red Neck Jazz Explosion) and its just out of this world. They don't call him the telecaster master for nuthin'.
