He was using a 24" ride. If he had mounted up over the tom, it would be like a wall between him and the band.

Iiiiiiiiiinteresting.
I always assumed it was just to make it physically easier. There's a direct correlation between ride height and % of shoulder required to use it.

Definitely. He's had issues with his shoulder and neck so that might have played into it too.
