That whole song is a clinic in high octane grooving. You can spend months on any one groove from that tune. The cowbell stuff alone is classic Gadd. Love it.

Thanks for the tips, I forgot I already have "My Spanish Heart" and also "If that's what it takes" by Michael McDonald which is an absolutely amazing album. I'm really enjoying that, the Barnaby Finch album "Digital Madness", Megadeth "The System has failed" and Michael Sembello's "Bossa nova hotel" at the moment.

gadd's played some great gigs.

too bad Al is such a jackass, and really not that listenable.

though I just can't help but wonder, if Jeff didn't die, how many of these gigs would be his?

but like i said before, and still havent seen anyone show otherwise, Gadd only plays with a very particular group of artists, he's juiced in BIG time, with the guys from 70's, and granted, yes, a FEW from more modern times, and nobody from 2000 on.

none the less, you stack up someone like Gary Chester to Gadd with #1 hits, it's not even close, given the exact time period. And I hardly ever see Gary Chester mentioned on this board at all.... it's weird how the drummer cults run, but it's very obvious it has little to do with commercial ability and much to do with niche artists (stoners).

That reason why Steve is a HOD favorite goes without saying... Vinnie and Dave are who they are as drummers because of Steve... And HOD attracts drummers that are particularly drawn to "Gadd" influenced (and beyond) drummers... I mean, HOD's main focus way-back-when was on Dave and Vinnie and that has evolved since, in a good way.

Elegant Gypsy changed my life musically, when a couple of the cuts off the album aired on the local rock station.

I was electrified!

It was my introduction to Jazz Fusion, and from there I explored the rest of field, going berserk with it for a number of years.

Surprisingly enough, the Dimeola/Gadd stuff also helped with my Latin playing; I think that was when I first started 'feeling' clave.

That's what becomes apparent to me when I see him versus just hearing him.

It reminds me of an iceberg: the stuff on the surface is just a fraction of what is going on.

That's why I don't think I'll ever really 'get' Gadd; I can only approach the ability to hear and feel the music that intensely.

To counter Josiah's quip about gary chester and steve gadd, Gadd was THE first one to play technically like ,say, Elvin Jones AND have his foot in the door with #1 hits. So, the first drummer to play Nite Sprite and The Hustle...He created a new category of a super studio drummer that a lot of drummers followed after.
