So I'm curious as to what you all think the essential elements of Vinnie's unique "feel" are: those special things that let you know that it's Vinnie you are hearing, even when you haven't actually read the credits on a given song or album.
To me, I usually can identify him by a combination of his snare sound, his beat placement, his little hi-hat and splash cymbal flourishes, and his ability to seamlessly incorporate odd meters and (often, though not always - the man is highly sensitive to the musical context in which he operates) highly technical, intense fills into even fairly "simple" songs and grooves.
Definitely a drumming genius...dare I say, a musical one as well!

A friend of mine played me a song by Lizz Wright, I did not recognize Vince...

So is Vinnie doing backing vocals?

Been listening a lot to that record.
Going for a very different sound there. Wood hooped Club Customs and using rods and stuff, that I guess we don't hear him do much. The other side of what was sort of presented on the Jeff Lashway album. Not too many Vinnieisms, just documenting the style with a bit of freedom.

Vinnie has a weirdness that I pick up as well as purposefulness when playing the weirdness. It can be something subtle or something obvious. That Megadeth stuff displayed that. Confident drummers play differently than everyone else.
