Steve - love your new website and was interested in your take on Alive. I grew up on the studio Akoustic Band recording and was not aware of Alive until the other day. I listened to it. It is great. I may be biased, but I like the studio album even better. They all sound more settled and relaxed, but with just as much beautiful playing and interaction. Curious on your take.
Also - I always found Dave's interpretation of jazz/swing so interesting. He swings like a mother, but he does not play in the traditional swing vernacular. A lot more bass drum and back beat interspersed. I imagine some purists may criticize him for this. But it works so well in the context.

Yeah his swing playing has some super interesting phrasing underneath - and he's been playing that stuff for so long he's just got it mastered. But yeah ALIVE was a game changer for me - then they released the video which is also kind of untouchable.
I really like the studio recording as well - the mallets on the toms are a nice touch on some of the endings.

I love Dave's playing here with Richard Bona. As usual he plays so effortlessly and fluid. Tasty solo in it.

Steve, not sure if you've already covered it in any of your tutorial videos before (you probably have), but there's a lick Weckl does here I'd love to see you do a breakdown of! At 3:57, he does what I think is repetitions of RLRLL between snare and ride, accenting the first R on snare and playing a kick with the second R. Have I got that right or completely wrong? The more I watch it, the less I'm sure if he's bringing the right hand across to the snare or not. He does it again for longer at 4:12. It sounds pretty cool and might be one of the few Weckl things I might actually be able to play with some practise!
