Me too. You and I are not the artist though. From what I hear and see, and what it says in the description it's just a rough video of a first take. He's playing ever so nicely behind the second time around too. I'm sure the EQ and whatnot come later. You can tell the drums are totally raw and dry. Seems like more of a behind the scenes type video to me.

Don't be mistaken by the "little" gesture of Steve, I think that he put more pression on that snare that it looks.

My (personal) point is based on the sound, not on his movements.
But don´t take me very seriously, it´s just a promo-behind the scenes video, and I know Steve has POWER in that left hand.

I hear you Juan. My point is that in those situations the musicians are at the mercy of the artist, producer and engineer. There are many recordings where I love the performance and hate the sound. Case in point when you hear someone like Vinnie Colaiuta on various recordings his sound changes like the weather. I'm sure he doesn't even know it because he plays the song and then goes home, never hearing the finished track. I'm not that quick to judge players on their sound in these commercial situations. They're just making a pay check. What I like on that rock track is the feel. Hass has a certain feel that combines urgency and relaxation. Tightness and looseness. I just really enjoy it.

Great playing, great feel, great time, but I winced every time he played his hi hat...that top cymbal looks as though it's clamped sooo tight I can't see how it can speak freely.
Good player though....

Drummers such as Denny Fongheiser, Bun E Carlos, and Joey Kramer all keep that cymbal dampened and tight. In Hass' case I believe it comes from playing jazz and executing left foot rhythms. If that cymbal is too loose, it's not possible to be accurate if you're attempting to play rhythms with your left foot. For heavy rock playing though, I tend to agree, loosen that thing up!

I just found this on his you tube. Pretty amazing solo on "I Hear A Rhapsody" with NYC guitarist Adam Rogers.

Check out some video of Tony Williams and/or Bill Stewart. They play(ed) some incredible stuff with their hi-hats, and they're not choked. Quite loose actually.
