I have a Reel Feel & Vic Firth practice pad and I'm looking for something that is the closest thing to a real drum. I feel like the pads I have provide too much rebound and are having a negative effect on my practice routine. Suggestions?

The sabian quiet tone looks promising.

I often put a dish towel over my real feel to take the "artificial" rubber rebound out of the equation. How much you need to double it up is easily determined by letting the stick rebound on your snare drum by just dropping it, and trying to match that with the pad & towel. I double mine up and have a pretty accurate representation. Additionally, you get the added bonus of driving the wife crazy as she searches for her missing dish towels. Fun times abounds.
Moderation's all well and good, just don't overdo it.

A Remo would probably be the best,.. you can tune it to whatever tension you like.. Sludgy or table top ...

I've tried more or less everything. E-Pad is the best I've found - not electronic but a kind of stiff foam. Makes you work, no extra rebound, but reasonable. When I was consigned to the hell of practice pads only, E-pad gave me back my chops on real drums. Joe Bob sez check 'em out. I wound up with 5 of the suckers.

+1 on the dish towel / washcloth on the rubber pad (HQ for me).
I also like using a moongel pad from time to time to fine tune things and make sure I'm staying as relaxed as possible, but that's definitely not a drum proxy.

A phone book is a nice alternative. It has LESS rebound than a snare drum for extra workout, but, it is a little bit louder than a rubber practice pad if that's an issue.

+1 on the towel/dish rag/ non-slip gripper pads on the practice pad.

Those will work, or you could alternate withe pillow. Or just do your exercises with brushes too.

What I use as as an alternative practice pad is a cork coaster. Works much better than a rubber pad .... The rebound and feel come very close to a normal drum head ....

I've been using the Promark X-Pad, and I really like it. I often put a dishtowel over it to take some of the rebound away, but to my hands it doesn't feel as "bouncy" as some pads can be. Great pad.
