Vinnie's ride on 'Secrets'
Does anyone know what ride(s) he used on that record? Was it the A Ping with the Brilliant finish? Thanks for anyone's help.

The Zildjian A Ping Ride are that old ?
You know what, it sounds like a Paiste ride cymbal to me...

I come from Tain, Vinnie, Omar, Jeff, Fish, Stewart, and many more...

I know what you mean Rodge. Actually I really liked the bell of the ride he used on Tom Scott's Desire album. A very distinctive kind of old Avedis Zildjian bell sound. Great record too.

Hmmm. I didn't realize the Ping was an A Custom. 'Secrets' came out in '89.
I really love his sound on 54 Duncan Terrace. Nice spread.

Could it be some kind of A Custom prototype? The first A Custom catalog I have is from 1990, I think.

When I saw Vinnie live in '88 and '90, he was using a 20" K Custom. That would be my guess for Secrets.

Re: Vinnie's ride on 'Secrets'
"Secrets" was waaay before A Customs. And if I remember correctly, right around the time of the original K Custom Rides. BUT.... Vinnie has a killer old A 22" that he records with a lot. The old Platinums, and some of the original buffed out Brilliants, came close to that old aged A sound (at times) as do some of the A Customs. Some of this record sounds like that old A of his, but there is some tunes (I'd have to go back and listen to tell which ones, specifically) that sound like that original K Custom "thing," which had a bell and a ping that could cut through ANYTHING (no real wash though!) That is probably what Rodge is referring to as sounding like a Paiste. Whenever I saw him live back then (like Todd) he was using the original K Custom Rides, and before that, Platinums.
In the studio, (as most know) all bets are off with most guys! I think it's the old A.
Yes Gavin, I also second the vote on "Desire," baaad record. I remember Chaffee raving about that record.
Anyone heard the remaster of "Secrets", how much better is it?

+1 on the "Desire" album. There is some great stuff on there. It's worth getting just for the tune "Stride"...

I just want you all to know that I love this topic.
I always wished the BD sound was a bit more punchier on that CD. Even on the re-mastered version. I'm not sure what the ride is though, I might agree with the old "A" theory, I don't think it's a K Custom.
