I met Fripp back in 92 when he gave a clinic and performance in NJ and I was fortunate enough to spend several hours with him - with the most intriguing being the dinner conversation. Fripp is actually a lot more outgoing and humorous, definitely dropping the rigid persona, when he feels comfortable with those in his company.
His outlook on the functions of a drummer and his suggestions definitely altered my approach to my playing. Needless to say, I was young and impressionable. As the playing became more and more unconventional, I wound up getting tossed out of the band I was in at that time.![]()
I can't believe I forgot to add Lindsey Buckingham to my list of favorite guitarists.
Great story! Being an old frat, I became a big Crimson fan in 1973 and never recovered from the experience. Haven't met any of the players, though I did trade a few e-mails with RF around 2000. He e-mailed me - imagine my surprise.
EDIT: I can't believe I left off Jimi Hendrix.
EDIT 2: Occurs to me I've also traded e-mail with P@ Mastelloto, the late Ian Wallace, and possibly Tony Levin though I kind of forget...

In no particular order:
Shawn Lane-TemPoral Analogues of Paradise
Scott Henderson-Not so much of a Tribal Tech fan, but Vital Tech Tones and his blues records are always fun.
Trey Anastasio-Goddamn I love his spirit..
Oz Noy ( I strongly urge all you guys to hear You Are The State, off Twisted Blues. I can't stop playing it! To me, it's what Hendrix MIGHT have sounded like today).
Holdsworth-of course! Gonna tackle Fred with my keyboard buddy next year.
Jeff Beck-I've always loved Guitar Shop especially..
Vernon Reid-I can still listen to Living Colour.
Michael Hedges-Gone too soon but left a vast library for us.
Keith Urban- Believe me-that dude can play.
And, Lanois. ANYTHING Lanois.
Wow, that was fun! Let's talk bass players now!

Re: Favorite guitarists....
There's a guy here in Nashville who has flown under the radar since I've known him. One of THE single most phenomenal guitarists I've ever heard. Bar none. Do yourself a favor and Google Jack Pearson. He took over in the Allman Brothers for awhile when Dickey Betts was ousted back in the late 90's. He plays in town now and then with his own band and I see him sitting in a lot with other artists. I guarantee if you could get Clapton, Beck, Holdsworth, Vai, Carlton, etc in one room and ask them all "Who's the most insanely talented guitarist that no one knows about?" Jack's name would come up in their first breaths if THEY even knew of him. Seriously. He's just that damn good.
I've had the pleasure of playing with him on some recordings and gigs this year and it's just crazy how he lifts everyone onstage up 10 notches musically. When you play with guys THAT strong, they make YOU stronger. It's crazy but it's true. Whenever I play with Jack, I play like I didn't know I could. Look him up. He's a master.

Re: Favorite guitarists....
The voiceover sucks, but Tommy is probably on my top 5 of gifted musicians that I've heard live.
His album 'Live One' is great, as is 'The Mystery'.
