I'm from the Ringo-on-TV generation. I first heard about Vinnie during the Zappa years but resisted him, first of all because I was having issues with Zappa's "humor" at the time. Went through several years of not listening to him at all. Gradually came back to it, but by then Vinnie was gone. And I'd see the cover of Joe's Garage and think, "Does humor belong in music?" Still don't have that disc. The second reason was an acquaintance who was a complete Vinnie snob. Wouldn't listen to anyone else. (Probably would have found Gaddabout insufferable for a while, too.) It took until the mid-'80s, the GRP live disc to begin with, before I began to discover what I'd been missing. And it took a while to sink in. Things like 5-5-5 (Shut Up N' Play) were off-putting when I first heard them. Wasn't until the early '90s that I finally tuned in.
