Evidently there is buzz this is a rip off (I prefer copy) of an old tune played in '77 called "Down in Flames"
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31749_162-57356869-10391698/van-halens-new-single-is-it-a-rip-off/

The song...sucks...basically imo...I would have told the boys to get that old VH vibe back from '84 and then
get "creative"...DLRoth sounds as good as he did in '84 so this was entirely possible.

Alex never looks in a rush...like that..."Uncle Al" holing it together!

Here is a vid of new VH w/o the classic snare sound...lousy cam recorder I guess

I didn't like it on first listen, but it's growing on me.

Re:"Down in Flames" ... Even if it’s true, I’m not sure it’s fair to characterize using parts of a song or idea that they had previously and was never recorded as a “rip off”.

At worse, they would have stolen from themselves? Right?

Huh?

Some funny lyrics in there.

“mousewife to momshell in the time it took to get that new tattoo”…

Aside from the snare sound, it's got nothing that jumps out and says VH. The solo was lame. It was more along the lines of him giving what was expected. The song coulda been written by anybody. The live stuff from Cafe Wha? is depressing and embarrassing, except for Alex on Hot For Teacher.

Kay. Apparently I haven't been publicly savaged, and apparently I can still have lunch in this town. Nice.

And in related news...

Cool thing for him to do.

Begs the question though… If he had 75 sitting around to donate, just how many total are in his "personal collection?"

Must be in the hundreds? Thousands?

What’s he doing with all those guitars?

It’s not like he’s Eddie Van Hal… oh… wait.

I've heard previews of all the tracks and I think its a solid effort. Not sure what the expectations were.

YES! I think Alex plays brilliantly on this new album. It sounds fresh and inspired. I quite have enjoyed listening to it so far...

I really wonder how he gets that signature snare sound!?
