Stand By Your Stick!!

Postby Frank Sanchez » Fri Mar 09, 2012 12:13 pm

Hey Guys,

I'm in the market for a new stick. What are you guys using these days and why? I've been using Vinnie sticks for a while, but they seem to lack the beef that I want. If I started with Vinnie's stick, sort of a 5B template, what would you guys suggest I look at?

Thanks everyone!

Have a great weekend!

Try the Vater 5B. They're a bit heftier.

I love Vic's 5B. There's a range of 3 different weights in each brick, so make sure to try all the pair the store has.

customdrumstix.com

You can get whatever you want, in whatever wood, finish, etc at nearly half the cost of the major brands.

I used to experiment with sanding the butt ends and tapers to change the balance of the sticks. My favorite "magic" stick is the VF 2B. I had CDX copy it and shortened it ever so slightly, it's perfection for my hands.

I love Vic Firth 55A. Head of a 5A but beefy neck like a 5B.

Vic Firth 5B is the home stick for me too... whenever I'm buying sticks the store employees and other customers look at me funny for pulling all the sticks and clicking them together and playing them to find the best pairs. I prefer the heaviest ones- more so because of the solidity of the stick than the weight.

The only other stick I've realy cheated with was Todd's signature stick, because sometimes the maple just feels better and that's a great stick... may be going back to that soon.

Vater wood 5B - I've been playing them since around '92/'93... They're somewhat of a hefty stick, but play lighter than their size - great response...

For a while I used strictly Todd's signature Promark stick. Lately, though, I've been finding myself going to the Vater Power 5B, which is like an elongated 5B, or believe it or not the Zildjian Dave Grohl signature, since to me it feels just like the Power 5B. If I can't find one, I usually go with the other. They both feel pretty close to my hands. I love the extra length, which gives me a bit more power, and the size of the stick feels like home in my hands.

I lean toward a heavy-ish Vic Firth 5A/B. Sometimes a stretch 5A. Something about the extra weight at the back end feels nice. I also enjoy the 55A as well.

Vator or Vic Firth 5B. Great sticks. I'm in Vator mode right now.
