amazing. never heard of him. thanks for sharing!
my understanding is that he was the roommate of dave weckl's back at the University of Bridgeport. since then he sorta was in the shadows of weckl for years. you can see weckl's influence both in style and even equipment choice. to me, he's the workingman's version of Weckl. his stuff doesn't go over my head as much as weckl, yet he makes what seems complicated tangible and musical. he also has great feel. sorta like russ miller without all the unnecessary *BLING* ughhhh...

Agreed!!!

I could never get into Spyro Gyra before... Maybe a few tracks here and there, especially when Gadd played... Joel made it so much more interesting to listen to... What a difference a great drummer can make when "driving" a "so so" band...

Yeah, Joel's a badass. Saw him do a clinic at Brents Music in Ft. Myers FL back in the early 90's. Man, I copped so much shit from that show. My playing changed overnight. Certain things just sank in and I grew as a player from that experience. Saw him last year doing his first gig with Oz Noy @ The Bitter End and was astounded at his touch and musicality. Plus, not just ANYONE could do that gig. A drumming hero for sure.
