Lucas Ives wrote:I was chatting w/ Dave yesterday, they were going for a really open sound on this one ... only 3 mics on the drums.

Can you elaborate on that a bit more? I can see at least 2 as over heads, did they go with 3 overheads?

Dave always gets such an amazing sound though, I bet you could throw some casico mic in front of his kit and it would sound great.

Some great jazz there, I dig the bass player's style

2 overheads and kick, I believe. Will double-check if you're interested.

I remember in one of his vids where he talked about getting the kit dialed in with kick and OH's then, just using the close mics for adding color. The sound he got with just the OH's was amazing.

For most of the small venues I play I will only use Kick and OH's, sending just a bit of kick to the house and using the OH's just for my monitor. I hear everything fine and in some cases even better than if I were using the full compliment of mics. I position them a bit farther back and lower than normal and I'm able to get a lot of depth and punch from the drums while still getting that brilliance from cymbals (I love being able to hear the stick cleanly on the ride...that's when I know I have the right position and eq).

Thanks for the heads up Lucas! Caught the 1st set. Sounded great. I didn't even need tickets or get out of bed. Just needed ear buds and an iPad and all is great. That made my night. Dave played some great solos. Loved the last tune they played. Dave's solo was tasty cakes good. Hope they steam the second set.

Weckl's solo was stellar. He was holding that behind-the-beat feel with ease and was so musical too. Some really hip phrasing happening.

But that's pretty much my only positive take away from that...

I had a tough time watching the video due to the guitar player jumping around like an idiot as if he was in an amphitheater or arena or something. You're at a jazz club. Sure, you're playing fusion-ish stuff, but come on brah, you don't need to draw that most attention to yourself. Those keyboard patches were fucking horrid, too.

Dean Brown (guitar) has been jumping around like that for decades. It's how he feels the music. I dug him getting freaky.
