Ya, that's some genius reasoning.... Really? Because YOU define the market? That's hilarious. Please, continue on in your marketing lecture... maybe you can lend your skills so all those drum shops can stop going out of business. Asshole.

Brass Tacks:

A: Some company pays a shit ton for advertising. What does a full page ad in MD cost?

B: A given player, let's call them 'V', gets really upset about people taking pictures of them.

C: Player 'V' is in beautiful full color pictures with given product.

Ya, Vinnie just decided "those" people are special and can take pictures and use his likeness. Come on.... laughable if you don't understand the business side of shit.

Yup, anyone can use anything. But this guy ain't just using whatever is he? Nope. He's signing contracts with particular brands. Get over it.

Vince's comments are really no better then this:

I don't know what else to say than I'm really amazed of the fact that you haven't been kicked out of here a long time ago. The pattern has been(since the 'yamahaplayer' -days) for a long time that you first come here insulting people, then step out for a few days, come back like a little puppy with kiss-ass positive comments, and after a while start the fight all over.

With all due respect, I think you clearly have some problems that you need to sort out in real life, but not in the internet.

Peace.

Quite possibly the most needlessly offensive post I've seen in 10 years on this forum.

Lads- no need to whip 'em out.

At the end of the day, it's still the same cat playing plastic, wood, and metal. If you want to call companies 'giving' gear to big guys on big gigs payment then fine. If you think (or in Paul's case actually know the guy in non-internet-land) he switched for musical/inspiration/wanting a change then fine.

We can debate what sounds better all we want, but in terms of why they made the choices they did frankly it's really none of our business. We still pay (hopefully) for the CDs, DVDs, and concert tickets so who gives a fuck?

Let's all play nice- you never know who reads this board.

Not sure how you went there from my question, which was NOT rhetorical. And I'm an asshole? Listen Josiah, YOU are the one spewing nonsense here, not me. I don't know why you're so mad, or care so much why Vinnie plays the gear he does, or feel the need to belittle his (or my, or anyone else's) character here, but please cool it. Take out your hostilities on your drums.

If advertising meant nothing and didn't sway people to at least check out a product why does every company music or not spend a ton of money on advertising? Not being argumentative, I would just like to know.

I'm not saying it means nothing. It obviously works. I was asking you (or anyone here) if you can remember any specific ad that resulted in you either buying something, or checking out a product. I'm not saying that ads have never swayed me either, but I think I'm more inclined to respond to an ad when it's for a NEW product or service. I think I find out about new gear via catalogs or searching on Amazon more than from magazines, but I remember seeing ads for stuff like Roland recording equipment and drum machines that resulted in me trekking down to a music store to check it out (this would be before you could do research on the Internet).

As for drum gear, when I was just starting out, I was definitely influenced by the gear that my heroes were using. No question. Nothing wrong with that. It takes many years of experience before you've played or heard enough gear first-hand to form a personal opinion. The first issue of Modern Drummer I ever purchased had Phil Collins on the cover, and I was a huge fan of his at the time. I lusted over those Premier concert toms. I remember saving up money to get a Ludwig Super Sensitive snare because he used one (as well as Bill Bruford, another favorite at the time).

Advertising definitely works. Through my experience working in 4 drum shops I have seen it's effectiveness in most cases and also witnessed some real flops too. Advertising not only informs you of a particular product but also helps cement the company in your mind giving it a strong, stable, recognized and accepted image. (Not always true !)
On a personal level outside of the industry let's say that although I've already seen a lot, I am still swayed and influenced and inspired by certain ads and images.
Vic Firth's recent factory tour video was great for example. Look at Peter Erskine talking about DW's Jazz series. Now I personally don't like DWs but ... after seeing that thought about at least trying some after that.
Music making at it's core seems to be about inspiration. I am inspired by peoples attitudes, approaches and how they play what they play. Sometimes the set up and angles, colour and look of a kit can set my imagination on fire.
I think it's the same for every one, at least I hope so ...
