Lets have some fun identifying these snares.

I thought it would be fun to get some gear nerdiness on and identify the snares from the Vinnie session pick from the last weeekend chatty.



I'm sort of a beginner in the world of drums, but I'll give a try one the ones I think I might know.

Pile #1(left) top to bottom:
1) ?
2) Think it might be a Longo, but I don't think it's not the old walnut one. Don't really recognise the throw off either.
3) Gretsch 4160
4) Gretsch ?

Pile # 2:
1) Gretsch ?
2) 6,5" DP Htmakier
3) 5" Hitmaker, but might be a Ludwig since it seems to have a lighter color.L

Both have die cast hoops on the bottom though, which I thought the hitmakers didn't have. So they might both be udwigs?


Pile 3:
1) 6,5 Brady Jarrah Ply
2) Gretsch Millenium Signature
3) Gretsch Hammered Brass. Probably the one with that big square throw off that he's been using a ton the last few years.

Pile #4:
1) Brady Jarrah Ply. Might be the 16" diameter one. I think his 14" is a blonde/natural one.

Yeah looks like it. I've never tried one. I remember that Vinnie once described his walnut Longo, same as I have, as a sort of contemporary version of a Radio King. Don't really know what that means as my snare experience thus far, is limited mostly to my own collection. Which is:

I've used a Pearl Masters free floating mple snare a bit which I also like and there's also a Sonor snare at work, that I don't know the model, which I quite like. Most snares I've tried, except for some defective ones can sound pretty cool though, it seems. I think I need some chrome and brass.

The top left snare is a 4x12 Joe Montineri snare. Joe tech'd for VC for several years and gave him that drum years ago. Joe Montineri is the VC of drum builders.

Vinnie's favorite kit in studio, that one !!!
That's also that kit used during "Mercury Falling Tour", and in studio for "Ten Summoners's Tales".

PS : he's not fan of power tom either, but in studio that drums gives him the best needed.

To me, the Yamaha and Gretsch signature drums have a similar character. The difference being what you'd expect from the difference in depth. The Yamaha sounds sounds fatter than I thoughi it would though and I keep it at a sort of medium tension. The both have that exactly right both crack and and fatness that sounds really homogenous and rich, but still cut through just the right way,

The metal drum I'm not sure it ever was a production signature drum. I just saw it on ebay and thought it would be fun to have. The seller said it was specially made for Vinnie for some sort of event. I don't really know, though. It's quite close to your regular 4160, just a little more dampened because of the paint. I find the regular ones quite controlled already. It's not the general favourite, but I have a feeling it might do well in a sort of rap/hip hop setting. Very dry.

The Longo is completely different. It has that compressed solid shell thing going on. Extremely rich and fat. Sort of has the full frequency spectrum from top to bottom in balance. Just a completely different experience to play on with extremely clear and pronounced ghost notes.
