One thing that comes through in his playing, that I hadn't really heard him do much before, is the linear fills with combos
of bassdrum/hihat+snare or bassdrum/hihat+ floor toms combos, like the ones heard at 0:45-0:47 and 3:10-3:12 of the title track.

I love those. That's pure fusion to me (<-- that phrase makes no sense, I know :) )

Here's a 16 minute mini documentary from the 'In This Life' sessions.

The level of awesome in that studio was enormous! And what I really love is that Virgil doesn't go for the established tried-and-true's but sources amazing, amazing musicians who are virtually unknown but talented, and he lends them a voice and allows it to be heard. The album itself is great too, obviously. Never knew Virgil had it in him to combine fusion with classical.

Virg rips in this one. So many goodies here. Turn it up with headphones on - quite good sound.

20 minutes of highlights. Enjoy, those who will 8-)

I got to about 12 minutes until I couldn't take the samey-ness anymore.
He really is amazing, one of the greatest technicians of all time. A machine. The terminator of drumming. I got excited when he went to cross stick and hat-groove.

some of this was incredible, just so many ideas, he seemed to run out of ideas towards the end but great stuff. One can see the amount of practice time involved!!!!

He definitely makes me want to bang my drums. Loved those clips. Particularly the mini-doc one.
