I interviewed him here (http://www.mikedolbear.com/story.asp?St ... cky|lawson) and have just prepared a tribute to him to be published on the same site. I'll see if I can't post a link when it's up on the site. Such a sad situation…

Got in my car late last night here in LA...turned to talk radio 870am and this
guy was talking about Phil Collins. Weird. Not the usual topic. I listened and
he peppered in Ricky this or Ricky that. He was giving a heartfelt tribute to
Ricky Lawson. I never heard this on talk radio before that usually is bent on
political jibber-jabber. The host was a backyard bass player and felt he needed
to address this topic.

He played the biggest gigs ever, and Steely Dan.

What a remarkable guy, who left his mark with his playing.

So anytime you see another drummer play, tell him or her that it could be that their name could be discussed after their passing, but only if they go for such excellence that it is almost impossible to achieve.

Ricky was perhaps the best drummer alive, if you judge him just by whom who he played for.

Compare him to Gadd...the discography is close, if not better.

Ricky was such an influence on me, can't describe...

Too often, amazing session musicians grind it out throughout a whole career without
getting the proper attention or acknowledgment. I think Ricky was one such - even with his level of exposure.

I felt quite strongly about this, and took it upon myself to make sure that a leading national newspaper
brought an obituary of Ricky Lawson.

No other specific moments - it was just great to hear those great songs every day (and night) and Ricky's impeccable playing. When I knew the project was coming in, I was immediately wondering who had the drum chair - I was really excited when I found out it was one of my all-time heroes...
