Hey Juan!
Sorry, I hadn't seen your message before.
The day with Weckl went great. I loved it. It's always amazing to get to meet your idols and if possible, sit down on a set and discuss drums and music with them.
He pretty much went through his usual stuff which can be found in his Natural Evolution dvds. He started out with ergonomics and how to setup according to your grip and body so that you don't fight your setup. He was very particular about that. We all did the closed eye test where you have to close your eyes and hit a rimshot naturally. If you don't, you have to adjust your snare drum so that you do hit the rimshot.
We then went on to check different strokes like the Free Stroke and the Moeller Stroke. I had those pretty much under my belt but it was good to have a guy like Weckl point out some stuff to me. He gave us a few exercises to work on using these strokes.
The afternoon was spent checking out his melodic soloing approach where he'll play some melodic figures and fill up the spaces with different limb coordination which end up being quite close to the common linear drumming approach. It's pretty much how he solos most of the time. It was cool to work on some of those figures and see him play them too.
Then, everybody did a duet with him. I played last and I must say that it was a bit intimidating to play in front of him. I managed to do good playing some kind of a funky thing. We then grooved in 7/8 together and I asked him a bit about samba grooves.
I think I would have preferred to be alone with him so that we could go in specifics a bit more. Most of the class wasn't very advanced, a lot were absolute beginners. But in the end, it's always cool to get to see Weckl up close like that.
If you have any questions about the masterclass, feel free to ask.
