Why not just sell it as it is, a student of Mike's wants to make a video about him? Anyway the whole thing's quite tiring, the relentless marketing thing...

I just made a story about somebody that inspires me, and I was very happy about the result. After all isn't what it's all about, either in music or filmmaking... to connect and share ideas.

Do what you love and share it. If somebody approached you because they loved your work and wanted to make a video about it. Would you turn them down because it would be too self-promoting yourself in a way? to that point, should you take down the 2 links in your signature, the one to your teaching website and your soundcloud page? Should you take down your website as well? I don't think so, do what you love and share it.

Alright, on that note, I am out of here. I wasn't a HOD member, I signed up just to clarify one point but I may have made it worst. I kind of had the feeling that engaging this kind of thread could be a mistake, in a way...

Have a great day everyone!

This is just silly, the whole thing. You and Mr. Johnston agree on a video about him without conditions. In other words, the entire project is up to you with no say from him? So you do a Lassie fluff piece on a 37 year old man like he's 67 and inspired the world with online lessons so he can sit back and say he had nothing to do with any of it. How is it a guy in micro control of his marketing machine agrees to such a thing in the first place with no knowledge of any of what's coming from it? Plausible deniability is a beautiful thing. May I suggest the theme from Rocky with doves flying from a basket of puppies for the sequel?

Whoa whoa whoa - the video is a bit cheezy but I fail to see the problem with it.
Actually, videos of pro quality are pretty common now (respectfully to ced) and can be made with a lot less than it used to require even 10 years ago. Sure, it puts him on a pedestal, but that's clearly what it's supposed to do.

I tried to watch it again, and the entire thing this time, but it won't play. Maybe something on my end, but his other videos play.

I really don't want to sully it up with a hastily formed opinion, but the fact that it was produced with a lifetime achievement award angle when it's a young guy who still earns a living with online drum lessons struck me wrong, that's all. And worse after re-reading the older thread.

Realistically speaking no video company is going to know who Mike Johnston is without meeting him somehow.
Most people in the drumming world don't even know who he is. That's why he's or his minions are punk forums and youtube vids.

It's not like Ced randomly ate at his restaurant and was impressed with him and wanted to do a short piece on his restaurant to help build his catalog because he liked the food.

This is much more specific, so there's no way this video would happen without him taking a few lessons or someone he knows does.

As far as the content, I doubt MJ had much to do with it.. except just talking,.. You can hear the same passive aggressive/aggressive aggressive tone that he had interacting on this forum. In the interview and his clinic, regarding teachers holding back things, If his hero called, Other teachers would just leave you but he wouldn't. A patent on the word "Family" haha...That seems to me just to be him talking.

The only thing that stuck out as being odd was being so emotional at Pasic that he had to leave the stage, but he remembered to grab a camera and video the crowd haha.... It's great that he got to live his dream.. not many people do.. especially coming from a teaching background, not a playing background. Dom Famularo is one of the only other guys that has managed that kind of profile as a teacher.

The students come across as having fun and enjoying learning.. That's what counts in the end.. If he sucked at teaching or they thought he was a dick it would come across..

The book was groundbreaking, he took linear playing to another level with that book. Buy it, you'll be impressed.

Hehe. Nice hyperbolic over-generalization.

Yeah, and have YOU changed the lives of tens of thousands of drummers all over the planet? Have YOU gained respect from the best players in the world? When you do, feel free to make a video.

Did you mean YOU there at the end? I'm confused.

I just watched the part I didn't watch earlier and it's not so bad. I obviously allowed my personal opinion overcome objectivity, so I'll take back half of what I wrote earlier and say it's not all that bad of video.
