Wow...there seems to be a theme of that HIGH crack going on here.
The MJ Live video snare was really tight!

This snare was also a fav back in the day for me I still really dig.
Tony Brock made his Ludwig's sing in this band;

Yeah that live clip is crazy. It's like he had literally every possible knob cranked. I'd love to hear what his actual setup was (aside from having massive arena reverb helping out)

The Wallflowers song was great.

My ears can't handle high frequencies like they used to; I enjoy medium and low tuning more these days.

That makes me think of Tony Thompson and Chic, and Tony Brock and the Babys.

Before I took up the drums, hearing this song on the radio made me think of a snare drum in particular and how it sounded for the first time:

Here are three that came to mind pretty quick.

In the high tuned category, a fellow named Rob Ladd's snare on Alanis Morissette's "Perfect" from her debut Jagged Little Pill always gets my attention.






Mick Fleetwood's snare on "Dreams" from their Rumours album has always sounded deep, rich, and 70s lush to me.



The sheer sonic muscle, and almost crack of lightning that jumps from Bonham's snare on "When The Levee Breaks" will always be one of my favorites.

Jojo's snare here is clean...very nice POP! Not sure this makes
a lot of sense, but it is that "classic" snare sound...something a
non-drummer would recognize as THAT sound. His entire kit
sounds great.

Fast forward to 5:33 for groove; love this guy's independence
and dynamics...the more I hear this snare the more I LOVE it!
