Ferocious drumming...Party in Simon's pants is pretty insane!
His dynamics are all over the chart...listens so well!
Love that Lukather vid! Simon has to be one of the most prominent
first finger thumb stick drummers who never transitioned to the middle
finger's looser position. His "old school" rock drumming to me is far
superior to today's larger kit drummers...probably because I grew up
with this style. His phrasing is always interesting, never going too far
into the drum abyss of chopfestness of boredom or as Ringo would say,
"rats running in a can." He also comes back to the snare more than any
other drummer. The only other one I can think of was Phil Ehart of
Kansas...both very effective, both tuning to a higher pitch to get that
crack attack that cuts like a knife. This is also the gig right after Jeff
passed and Luke's very much gripped by this event at this stage of his career.
Simon reaching for those cymbals looks cool, but not very ergonomic...
yet, we can look forward 20 plus years now and see it didn't ruin his playing
career. Tambu was in the works and Luke playing w/Simon might have been the
intro into TOTO???
John Pena is a bad man on bass! Love this guy... Some of Garfield's
keyboard sounds are hard to stomach for me. He used some of the
same patches for Jeff's instructional video...didn't care for them even
in the 80's! Luke's singing is underrated...I love the 1970 tune he wrote.

He's coming to Detroit in Dec. I was able to catch this. He was, of course, insanely good. Whole band was ridiculous, with dynamics chops. Bass player especially was impressive, Ernest Gibbs, what a feel, kept the bottom going when SP would go crazy. No idea how he did that, with a smile.

No, that studio is near Burbank and Van Nuys if I recall. I guess that would be Sherman Oaks?
