Gavin,
It's a pleasure just to watch a drummer/clinician who's also obviously spent some time working on communication skills and some personal introspection. So many times drummers of your caliber get up to explain something and it becomes apparent they've never put much thought into their own processes -- they just did it, and sometimes they get frustrated when having to explain things in abstract (i.e. helpful) terms. You, Ersko, Cobham, Jojo, Todd ... there's a small contingent of clinicians I consider to be real communicators and ambassadors of the instrument.

“Let's try some of my songs.” Dave Grohl, top sign drummer will be fired.

would love to see more of this clinic. nice explanation of what's going on. like the part about having to play a solo on the snare and floor tom only. that's all i bring to my r&b gigs.

I second Gaddabout, you have great communication skills Gavin. When you speak it's kinda mesmerizing, you have a very enlightening way of communicating something, which makes one feel philisophically enriched.
I could just listen to you talk for hours. It's like a guitarrist friend I had whom I would hang out in his house and sometimes just listen to him play while just lying in the sofa without saying anything for an hour or something. It had an effect on me which made me increase my perception or something.
I just love people who can transmit something profound(whatever the means are), they are truly a minority nowadays in this world.
Check this out for a good laugh.

Gavin is a class act and a blessing to the drumming community, for sure, sharing his wisdom and making himself- and his work- accessible to all of us.

Yes! Great stuff, Gavin. Give me a clinic on thinking musically any day. I really liked the discussion on filling in the holes of the vocalist. I'm definitely getting older.

Ha ha! Make that vocals! With the week I've had, I'm leaving that alone just to revisit and have a laugh.
