Either way this guy sound great. Not easy to pull that off (especially with brushes).

Wow..... Why? It's to develop your ears and phrasing. Playing along exactly with the horn line in a video isn't the greatest thing ever listening wise but the depth of musicianship developed doing so is massive. That's not a skill just anybody can do.

Why? Are you being serious Avi? Well in the same way that you took the time to trawl Google images for your hilarious and facetious comment, Dan took the time to study Tristanos lines just as guitarists study Metheny or Charlie Christian or saxophonists study Parer and Brecker. Why? Because he hears something in Tristanos phrasing which he sought to study, transcribe and work at in order to give himself a looseness and freedom in his phrasing on the drums.

This diligence and attention to detail has resulted in Dan touring the world and playing with such respected jazz greats as David Binney, Lee Konitz, Miguel Zenon and Kenny Werner , recording hundreds of albums both as a band leader in his own right and as an in demand sideman.

Out of interest if this had been Vinnie, Brian Blade or *insert your favourite drummer* posting clips like this, would you have posted the same pic?

Im with you Avi... A close friend of mine has worked with him alot....He swears up and down by him.. Ive watched tons of vids of this cat. He is awesome,but I dont get the hype either.
