I read a lot of positive reviews of the Ahead snares and was excited to see them in my local store. I played the 13" and the 14". They both suck. My Yamaha brass snares blow them away. I have the 7x14" and 6x13" Nouveau snares and they're way better than anything on your original list.
If you really want a Black Beauty type snare then just save your money and buy the real thing. Even a regular Supra is a nice metal snare.

I bought a BB a little over a year ago and it's been everything I thought it would be.

not to toot my own horn, but check out what I did with an Acro shell from ebay for $30. Then I bought most of the tube lugs, hoops from drummaker.com. Hot-rod-acrolite

I know, they're aluminum, but they sound amazing. I would say that brass is the third best sounding snare material, behind bronze and aluminum.

Copper is nice too. My Yamaha Roy Haynes copper is by far the best metal snare I've ever played.

I forgot about copper. They really do sound nice! And I don't mean to say that brass doesn't sound great either. I have a chromed brass Ludwig that I absolutely love, but my hammered bronze has something special going on.

The hammered bronze Ludwigs are very nice. My Roy Haynes copper is also hammered. It's an excellent drum.

My wife, awesome woman that she is,just bought me a 6.5x14 Black Beauty as a gift. It is thick sounding. I thought it would be louder, but its projection is clean even 15ft away unmiked. So far I have it tuned a tad higher than a "Bonham" type tuning. Its a little more than the snares you listed, but worth the extra $$$. i also have a 5.5x14 Mapex Black Panther brass. One of the older ones with die-cast hoops. That was really inexpensive and is fantastic. Now that i have the BB i tune the Mapex a bit higher than normal for more of a funk sound and Im lovin it.
I love the brass snares because there is so much going on in the actual sound of the shell. Very complex and rich, and with the two I have, they can handle whatever you throw at them.
