These Sonor Vintage drums sound really great. I may have to get over my disdain for those offset lugs and get me some...

Steve Smith to me is always playing music that showcase his drumming, not a good thing if you ask me...

Fortunately there is some good stuffs he did like the live with Steps, but here, it's like a good student who did his homework, nothing magical and spontaneous, lick one, lick two, and so on...

Paul, don't buy that drum please bro'. :-)
I come from Tain, Vinnie, Omar, Jeff, Fish, Stewart, and many more...

Don't worry, I won't. :D I'll never get over those lugs. They do sound great though. On the other hand, I don't like Smith's drum sound with the Black Dots.
I got his last two recordings, and his drums just don't sound good with those heads. I think Black Dots only work on larger toms with a tighter tension.

I agree with you, Rodge. I'm a BIG fan of Steve Smith in the 70"s and 80"s: Jean-Luc Ponty, Focus con Proby, Steps Ahead, some stuff from Vital Information... His VHS's (SS parts 1 and 2) were awesome, I wore out my tapes. Coincidence or not, after his studies with Freddie Gruber, from 90's, he hasn't sounded as spontaneous as he used to, to my ears, and with a Tony Williams-ish and lighter approach, instead of his older Tony-Gadd-Elvin-Chaffee one, more powerful. Just my 10 cents.
