Hello House of Drumming Drummers. The earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan has left most of us speechless ... but feeling a need to do something, many musicians are participating in all star recording projects (I played on 2 tunes of the just-released "Jazz for Japan" album available @ iTunes, other drummers include Steve Gadd, Tommy Brechtlein, Ndugu Chancler and Alex Acuña, et al ...) and/or "live" concerts. I'm involved with the planning for an event that begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 9 at Vitello's Jazz Club in the valley (on Tujunga). Music, music, music plus a Silent Auction of some pretty great items including a brand new DW Collector’s 6.5x14 polished chrome over steel snare w/ chrome hardware, a Zildjian "Inspiration Pack" of cymbals, various Zoom video and audio recorders & USB mics, swag, signed film scores (including the "Flying Scene" score paper from ET, signed and donated by composer John Williams), Shure complete set of drum mics, and so on ... BANDS INCLUDE:
Yellowjackets (w/ Will Kennedy, Jimmy Haslip, Russ Ferrante & Bob Mintzer)
THE TRIO (Terry Trotter, Chuck Berghofer and me)
Alan Pasqua / Darek Oles / Peter Erskine Trio
Wayne Bergeron Big Band
Denise Donatelli (w/ Ray Brinker on drums)
David Arnay (w/ Ralph Humphrey on drums)
Aaron Serfaty Brazilian Trio
Franklyn Ajaye (Jazzcomedian)
Alex Acuña (solo set) !
the top combo and big band from USC — the band just won top honors up in Monterey this past weekend
and more
and ALL for a good cause!

Welcome back to HOD, Mr. Erskine. It's been a long time. And, thanks for, once again, demonstrating the charity and humanitarianism of the jazz community.
Best of luck.
Best of luck.

While I applaud such an effort, and encourage it.
Maybe take the point of audience to make it further known that G.E. built the plant, made 8+ Billion in profit this year, and didn't pay ANY taxes.
I'm sure they could spare something for the effort.... just saying...

But, cutting taxes for billionaires and transnational corporations creates jobs and economic prosperity for everyone. That's why the American economy and the middle class are stronger and more prosperous than ever. What-er-you, some kinda socialist, tryin' to redistribute the weathlies' wealth.
PS: Not only did GE pay no federal income tax, it got a refund. And, Exxon/Mobil made $41 billion in net profit and paid no taxes either. I guess it pays to bribe congressmen and write your own laws.

While I enjoy a spirited political debate almost as much as the next guy, I'd like to focus discussion and awareness in this thread towards getting as many people out as possible to help raise some funds for the Japanese Red Cross to help alleviate any suffering and pain ...
A lot of great music planned for tomorrow ... a tremendous collection of drummers as well as Silent Auction items. I thought this all might prove to be of great interest to the southern California drumming community ...
Frankly discouraged by the minimal number of replies and even the # of views as evidenced by the Forum Views counter ...
Thanks,
Peter

Peter, I think it is an awesome idea and speaks volumes to the character of both you and the other musicians involved. Unfortunately, I live on the East Coast, so I can't attend, but if I were in SoCal, I certainly would. I've already made donations to Japan, as far as the "can't attend option."

Word, good stuff is always in LA.
Re: Jazz Relief for Japan Fundraiser/Concert 4/9
I've already donated to the Red Cross for this tragedy, but I'm going to try to attend this show too and show more support. If I can't make it, I'll make another donation just because.
Re: Jazz Relief for Japan Fundraiser/Concert 4/9
I donated to the Red Cross also! Wish I could attend the show but am a No. Cal. guy. Thanks, Peter.
