New Vid (Just kick, snare and hat)
Looks great in 1080p on YT as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUy1OH-Hn1Q
I actually filmed this a few months ago but never uploaded it. I was going through my computer and backing up stuff last night and found the project so I thought I would finish it and upload. It's a bit a long but I figure folks can skim through if they like? Anyways, practicing this kind of thing is always fun. There's a lot of depth and layers to those three parts of the kit, and it's challenging to really focus on the dynamics of each one and see how that affects the groove. Hope you guys dig it!

Re: New Vid (Just kick, snare and hat)
Reminds me of the 1, 3, and 5 minute routine I used to slave over.
a. Play the exact same groove for 1 min, 3 mins, and then 5 with no variations! Harder than it sounds,
especially when you record yourself.
b. Do the same as in (a), but change the dynamics...more hat, snare, or BD.
c. Same, but now change the tempo, start low before fast, as low as 40bpm.
d. Take a break and put on something hard to groove to with headphones cranked.
e. Get back into it.
PS--Don't be surprised Steve if you hear a variation of this on a rap tune or it is just flat out stolen somewhere.
Makes for a nice drum track. I think I might make an Mp3 of it to play as background music with the beep
for my melody line

Cool! I liked the video!
I've been practicing with only kick/snare/hat for years, trying to develop grooves and dynamics using the essential parts of the drum kit. I also set up the floor tom and a ride cymbal to work with fills/accents but my main focus is the kick/snare/hat.

Your hi hat sound has a lot of character to it... May I ask what they are? I'm guessing a custom.

Thanks all!
Top hat is probably the oldest relic of the kit..mid 80's 13" New Beat. Bottom is a K' that's a few years old.
