...they should have picked Marco Minnemann in my opinion.
Now that would have been exciting.

The band Steve posted sounds A LOT like Fates Warning...Mark Zonder would have been a solid choice imo.
Mike is Mike...he'll kill this gig...fans will dig him...very likeable cat.

That performance certainly didn't deserve all these MD camera angles...

It gets offtopic now, but I just can't resist... Mike's MD performance is equaled if even bettered by Jason Bittner in 2005. Check out the jazz and samba sections starting at approximately 2:50...

If you're going to play to an audible click in front of an audience, you better bury it. Especially if it's your own solo. Sorry. Thought I was going to see something fresh. The jazz and samba sections were exactly what I'd expect from that type of drummer.

Perhaps I'm being a jackass and am in some bad mood that I'm not aware of, but that clip of Mangini was some of the worst sh*t I've seen in a long time. I understand that he has "his thing" and it isn't that, well... I don't care. When someone who is an associate professor at Berklee gets up at a festival for their instrument and plays something an incoming student could bury into the ground... makes me think that perhaps Mangini doesn't quite have the perspective that someone who is supposed to be "professing" the knowledge of their instrument should have.

In simple terms-- what was he thinking?

Perhaps he needs to consult one of his colleagues...

There should've been a trap door between the two kits.

Say what we will, he's got some octobans.

I think the DT guys are going to have to rein in Mike's weird patterns and all that stuff.

Portony kept things pretty simple, not much modulation, just interesting patterns, and heaviness.

Not really much "I'm a drummer" stuff, more that he was a drummer in a prog band playing difficult music.

Should be interesting to watch.

Jason Bittner is a Zildjian Artist.

right? makes it a bit discouraging, or maybe just the reality is that, being "big" has little to do with musical (or drumming) contribution.

*shrug*

i heard more dream theater music watching those vids then i ever had before, they were entertaining at least
