Can I fix a flat spot on a BD Hoop?

Postby bclarkio » Tue May 24, 2011 1:02 am

My '61 Ludwig kit is turning 50 years old this year, so I've pulled it out of storage and started cleaning it up.

One of the bass drum hoops was stored off of the drum, standing up, and it's got a flat spot in it.

I'm guessing some moisture got on the floor, and that plus twenty years of sitting around did it in.

I've already got some crazy ideas about how to fix it, including some Do-It-Yourself 'steam bending.'

Any suggestions about the right way to go about it?

Can't really tell from your description how flat it is but if it's just a small spot, I'd just put it on the batter side at the bottom and clamp the pedal there. You'll never see it an it won't make a single iota of difference in how the drum tunes. I wouldn't give it a second thought
myself....

I am not an expert, but the reason that the hoop transformed was because a long period of PRESSION and HEAT.
I would do the same process but in the reverse direction...I think it can be reversed to the original position...

Put a picture if you can and some ideas will jump to the forum.

Now why didn't I think of that?

Because I was thinking so much about how to fix it.

Maybe I Think Too Much.

Paul Simon wrote a song about that.

Well, if you can put the hoop on the bass drum without fighting...problem out.

I was specting a hoop with a igloo shape. :)
