More Gavin from this event..Some of the most musical drumming I have heard...in the middle of this tune he really takes it up a bunch of notches.

The first time I heard this tune was on the Modern Drummer flex record when I was a kid. Jeff's playing had me speechless. I would play it over and over just to hear the cymbal choke part. Gavin's playing is a beautiful tribute. The fill at 1:51 is sublime. I wish I could find one of those 20" Ks that sounded that good.

I think I've mentioned I spent countless hours playing along to that CD. Loved it. Great playing. But what always struck me about it was the fantastic drum sound. I'm not a guy that spends a lot of time talking about drum sound or gear, but that CD is like drum sound nirvana. It was about as perfect as it's ever been or ever will be.

I didn't get that CD until years after hearing the Modern Drummer record but I loved it the instant I heard it. What a goldmine of things to learn. What impresses me about that recording is, aside from the near flawless direct to disc sound, the whole thing was recorded live; one song after the other in real time.

Speaking of this drum sound....It is perfect isnt it? You can tell that he is super comfortable with his kit.When he plays the big band stuff it actually sounds like a big band kit. Talk about phenomenal touch.

Gavin talks about some of his tuning approaches for the bass drum in another clip from this same clinic....He gives props to Derek Roddy!!

I managed to find the James Newton Howard album with Slippin' Away on iTunes. The "E Minor shuffle" that Vinnie does with Karizma is also on the same album!
Damn Gavin has serious chops.
