He's obviously a great drummer, but playing along to a recording, with the existing drums in the mix along with his own drums, will only result in a fatter sound than what is really happening.

I found an old book on syncopated rolls by Jim Blackley, 1962. Saw it mentioned and could only find it on Scribd. Lots of good stuff on that site actually. This comment shows certain things don't go out of style.

It's not only hard, it's impossible. It makes it sound deceptively fat.
