To me Dave is an artist, because he creates 'art'. He has a brilliant musical mind and he is a true master of the instrument. So, I listen to him. To what he has to say and to the stuff he comes up with. He is way beyond me and way beyond most musicians. What is happening now is like going to the greatest restaurant in the world and telling the chef what to cook...why? That chef can come up with stuff you would not be able to imagine yourself. That is why you go to such a restaurant. If he is playing 'what the fans want' it becomes entertainment...not art. He is able, and he should be leading the way. Pushing the envelope. Not asking for directions, if you catch my drift. I've had the pleasure of meeting Dave. It was genuine friendliness and I would feel really weird if I was paying to have dinner with him. The man is so awesome. If you have that kind of money, just invest in the project I'd say. That is another thing with this pledge stuff, that endless list of things you can buy. Like 'spent $12.000,- and join Dave as he is walking his dog'. It's silly to me. But there is this line I remember from my last visit to LA. Sheila E. put it this way, 'we Americans live by the rule "make money at all costs." To each his own

In fact, Access Denied was a great sound and a fun song that was still definitively Weckl Band. So ... someone make that happen.
Hard Wired and Rhythm of the Soul were pretty strong efforts. I hadn't forgotten about that. I think I tuned out on the standards (Chicken) and the really weird Latin pieces (Tiempo, etc.) where Dave went into the "I have to hit every accessory item to my left with random abandon during these sections of the song" mode. Take those away and their stuff was surprisingly hip compared to how I remembered it. I have mixed emotions about songs liked 'Tower of Inspiration' and 'Tower '99.' Ditch the horn samples and get a real horn section! But the revision of that song kicked booty, and Dave grooved his ass off on that one.
My very basic conclusion was I had forgotten how fun it was to listen to a drummer album where he just ... played. No pretense, no attempt to dumb down the playing to make more commercial music. I have to support someone like that because no one else is doing it. And there's no one better at it in our generation that Weck.
